Is there a way to export membership fields from a contribution or advanced search?

We record membership payments as contributions and would like to be able to export the 'start date' field when doing a thank you letter export from a contribution search (or an advanced search if it could give more exportable field options) so that we know which package (new member or renewing member) to send with the thank you letter and receipt.

So far, the best solution I've seen on the forum is to add custom fields to the gift record that would indicate wether it was a new membership or renewing, but since that info is already stored on the membership record, it seems a little redundant.
