'Cookbook' for a meeting locator?
May 07, 2007, 08:21:04 am
Hi all,

I could use some feedback/suggestions for my next project - a meeting locator. I need to help members find weekly meetings that best fit their schedule and location.

For each meeting, I'll have fields with the regular day, time, and location. Some members will want to search on day/time. Some will prefer to search on by location.

That last requirement 'smells' like a Google Maps project to me. Is anyone aware of something like this using CiviCRM I should try to re-use?

TIA!

Michael,
Have you decided what 'object' you're going to use for these meetings?
- a CiviEvent "event" - which can "carry" a location and address with geocoding
- a "simpler" CiviCRM "activity" of type=meeting - which just carries a location string w/o geocoding
- some other type of record...

This info might help us and others give you more feedback on the "locator". That said, I'm not aware of integrated vicinity search functionality other than the Drupal contributed Event Finder module (which I'm not sure has been maintained). If you wind up deciding to implement a vicinity type search for the CiviCRM location/address objects - we would be interested in working with you so that it uses an API for the search that others can also take advantage of.

Good point. I'm open to feedback on that, but was planning to use a CiviEvent object.

Thanks, again.
