Improvements to training resources
October 18, 2010, 02:55:24 am
Hi there,

I made some improvements (and have some more planned) for the CiviCRM training pages and resources.  They are weighted more towards the user and admin training, but I've tried to make them applicable to the developer training too (though I haven't been to a developer training for a while so am kind of unaware of how they are structured at the mo).  Would be great to get some feedback on this and to know if this is useful for developer training too / see how we can integrate this.

Quick summary:

   1. I improved the slide content, and changed (improved?) the template for the user and admin training.  I think the areas that are most in need of attention now are day two parts, i.e. the components, esp. CiviCase and to a lesser extent CiviMail.  That will be uploaded to the wiki tomorrow.
   2. I wrote a new 'Running great trainings page' http://wiki.civicrm.org/confluence/display/CRM/Running+great+CiviCRM+training+sessions on the wiki which aims to be a collection of resources to help make trainings  better.  It is based on experiences running trainings and feedback we recieved in the evaluation sheets that we handed out at the London training.  Hopfully useful but I am not a teacher in any formal sense so it would be great to get feedback from people that are.
   3. I improved the CiviCRM trainings home page, reordering things and collecting the event specific pages under a child page.  I think we don't do well enough at distinguishing between trainings and meet ups.  It seems like the training is coallescing around 'user and admin' and 'developer and implementor'.  Am happy to further clean up and better order this page so please send me suggestions and objections :)

Going forward

KatyJ is going to go through the exercises (she sat through them fresh so is in a good position to do this) for the admin and user training and improve the formatting, structure and make them hang together better.  They also need to be internationalised.  Not sure if this means one less US centric version or different versions for different places - would be good to hear thoughts on that.

I met up with Adam Hyde (Floss manuals person) a couple of days ago and we talked about more closely linking the book and the training.  We came up with the idea of printed exercise books made in booki, corresponding to chapters of the book that people can work through as part of the training. Booki which produces nice ready to print output.  The workflow would be that in preperation for training, you go and get a book printed for each participant and an exercise book.  Which would make our trainings v. professional.  Also, we think it would look really attractive to a funder to say that we are going to make this educational resource.

Good stuff Michael, training is a vital ingredient of a succesful project!
Whilst we are on the topic, we have done quite some 'Train-the-trainer' sessions where we instruct would-be teachters on how to train on software functionality. This does not focus necessarily on the contents of a CiviCRM training, but more on training skills. At the next opportunity (a sprint located in Benelux?) we will offer that training to consultants/integrators that are keen to attend. Obviously it will be a great help to know if folks are interested, so let us know (hommel@ee-atwork).
Perhaps we could also combine this with the next book sprint and perhaps create a trainers handbook as well?

Hey Erik,

They are all great ideas :)  I think Lobo is up for train the trainer stuff.

I'll be making a wiki about plans for the next book sprint soon - be good to make sure this is in there.
