Error - civiCRM menu unstyled

Hi there,

Totally new to civicrm and inherited a project containing errors. Please see attached.

As you can see at the top of the screen the menu is unstyled, and looks to be related to the JS error in firebug.
I assume I am missing a file that contains the functionality for the .menu() function?

I have rebuilt the menu over and over with confirmation message, yet still problem persists.

Sorry if this is a little vague, I'll provide any further details if needed.
Any help will be appreciated :)

civiCRM version I am using is 3.1.

That's definitely a possibility--you could certainly try uploading a fresh codebase. Either find the precise one you need or even consider upgrading right now--as long as you keep full backups of files and DBs, then you should be OK. If the upgrade works, then you're all set.

thanks for the help :) before uploading a fresh codebase, if possible I'd like to attempt to find a fix specific for the menu.

Are there any common/generic files that are specific to civicrm menu styling?
I understand the css is generated at runtime, but is there a common javascript file that controls the expansion/collapsing of the menu?
