We've decided to offer a promotion where contacts with a new membership will receive an extra 3 months on what would otherwise be a year-long membership.
Now, I know I can set up another set of membership options where the default period is 15 months. Another option is to go in manually (after they've otherwise created the membership), and change the end date myself.

I know it's possible to create coupon codes for discounts and such (http://civicrm.org/node/566) -- is it possible to create a coupon code that extends the membership period? (This would be my preference, but I don't want to drive myself crazy on something that's not actually possible!)

i dont think thats possible.

A different option might be to give them a 25% discount on membership which is equivalent to 3 months extra
