OG and CiviCRM

OK.  Pardon me if I repeat something that has been discussed in another topic.  I have read several topics along the lines of this topic and have found some useful information.

I am looking for a really concise explanation of the relationship between OG and CiviCRM on my drupal site.  Some of the questions I would like to see addressed are: Do I want to synch the two (pros and cons, uses for unsynched vs. synched) and how best to do this?  What are the key differences between the two?  When do I want to approach things through OG only, CiviCRM only, or when do I need to do something in both modules?  What do I want to avoid doing in one to prevent messing something up in the other (and is this a possibility I need to be concerned about)?  etc.

Anyone with a good link to information on this I would appreciate your sharing it or if you have something to offer directly that too would be appreciated.

Thanks,
Charlie

While you are waiting for a reply, perhaps you could mention what OG is.  I noticed that it was unavailable on a screen.

OG is an add-on module to Drupal called Organic Groups

http://drupal.org/project/og

and some add-ons that go with it.

Some organizations who use both Organic Groups and CiviCRM have expressed the need for a synchronization tool. Our team developed an initial implementation and have included it in the the 1.9 distribution. Draft minimal documentation is here:

http://wiki.civicrm.org/confluence/display/CRMDOC/Organic+Groups+CiviCRM+Synchronization

I am not familiar with all the use cases for this - but one benefit of the synchronization is that it provides an automated way to give Organic Group administrators permission to view and edit the CiviCRM contact records for members of "their" group.

There is some discussion / specification for a specific use case here:
