Imported contacts display names are email addresses

It appears that all imported contacts have display names of nothing but their email addresses in an implementation I've been working on. This affects contact search results, dashboard pages for contributions, memberships, events, etc. Re-saving a contact with no changes seems to fix the problem for that contact. How can I "rebuild" the display name value for all these contacts?

I'm having exactly the same problem, except mine goes a step further: 

The State/Province field is showing incorrect data. I posted the issue here:

Which civicrm version you are using ?

could you try to replicate issue on our public demo site : http://drupal.demo.civicrm.org/

recently for v3.2 we have fixed two issues related to display_name and sort_name formatting.

you might want to integrate these patches
