How to change "contact type"?

Is there a way to easily change a contact type (i.e. change an individual profile to and organizational profile)?

beenlouis :

A profile is just a bunch of fields (which could be specific to Individual /Organization/ Household or Participant, Contributions,etc for that matter) that are bundled together providing a window into your data. You could always delete fields from a profile and add new fields.

I would recommend reading our CiviCRM Book esp the chapter on Profile

@Beenlouis:

If you meant contact profiles in the everyday sense of the word, as in, how to change a contact added as being one sub-type (e.g. "Student") to be stored as another different contact subtype on that contact's record (e.g. "Journalist" or "Individual"), the answer's here but unfortunately you probably won't like it: http://forum.civicrm.org/index.php/topic,12109.0.html

Right now changing contact sub types is usually a very inconvenient process and best avoided at all costs. For anything that could conceivably change, it's best to use groups or tags and save contact types for fundamental characteristics. Chances are it's easier to delete then re-add the appropriate contacts. Exporting them then re-importing them, selecting the different contact type, might be a time-saving workaround.

If you did mean CiviCRM Profile displays, then apologies and Yashodha Chaku's answer probably has it covered.

I found a way to change contact sub-types (using merge).  For details see the thread at http://forum.civicrm.org/index.php/topic,12109.0.html
