One of the options in the Membership Types options is to send a Renewal Reminder a number of days before a membership expires. But if you select this you can only use a User Driven Message Template. The problem with this is you do not have access to any of the membership data ( Membership Type, Expiry date etc.) in the User driven template, only access to Contact record tokens when constructing the template.  In the System and Work flow Message templates,  Memberships - Receipt (on-line) and Memberships - Sign up and Renewal Receipts (off-line) these have access to the membership record fields.

So you can send a renewal email out, but you can't provide any information about the membership. This seems very illogical to me especially as you have access to the membership data when sending out receipts.

Has anyone experienced the same problem and found a way around it?

I assume you mean to enter the membership tokens manually rather than use the insert tokens drop down as for the contact details?
No I haven't tried that as I assumed they would not be available.
Is there a list of the membership tokens anywhere? I have looked in the documentation and can only find tokens in reference to contact details.
