Joomla install errors

Here is my problem:
Joomla 1.5 (latest version)
civiCRM (latest version)

I have an install of CiviCRM that I upgraded (and its not working). It looks like the reference URLs are not being called (at all). I have attempted to edit them in my administrator panel, but it does not update. The config files are set to the right place.. I have checked all files, cleaned out template cache, nothing seems to work at all. I am also missing my icons and menus in Civi as well. The exact error message that I am getting is: Notice: Undefined index: host in /home/content/a/b/e/abetterbal/html/m/administrator/components/com_civicrm/civicrm/CRM/Core/Config.php on line 449. The data is in the database.

Now, I have installed a fresh copy on the same server under a different site (under another subdirectory) so I know its not my host, or the server. This install of Civi is working perfectly, with no load errors.

However,  all of my data is locked in the database with the apparently corrupted install. Is there any way to simply get the data that I would need (contacts, email, donatations listings) from the old database and put it into the new Joomla site? Of course, I wouldn't want to take any data that might be causing the problems. Note, I cannot access the export functions in the CiviCRM, so this would have to be done via MySQL.

I really need some help with this. I contacted some people on the list for professional services, but have not gotten any responses. I have also posted on elance. The data is pretty key to the organization that I am helping. I did make a backup database before I started the install, but I don't really want to move backwards.

clearing config_backend (setting to null) from civicrm_domain table (which forces things to reset) fixed this.
