Renewal of members
November 04, 2010, 08:10:59 am
At the moment renewal is possible for anyone at any point of time - technically a member can renew multiple times in a day. This is probably not a major concern when memberships are added manually (by a member of staff) or contribution pages for paid memberships which go through a payment layer before renewal - lets face it no one would want to pay for a membership 10 times , or would they...wouldnt this mean they are insuring themselves against inflation...by not paying for price increases!  Anyway....

But in case of a free membership this would mean that a person can renew unlimited number of times going through a contribution page again and again. Same is the case when we send a link to a contribution page with checksum.

This may not be desirable when a membership is free for a set period (like the 1st year) and then becomes a paid membership.

Thinking about how to prevent this, a quick solution to this may be to gather when renewals can be processed on the Membership Type and then verify that the current end date conforms to this.

Would be interesting to see if anyone has some thoughts on this or has found a workaround for this.

Regards

Susanh

This has been problematic for us as well. More because the renewal will automatically renew for a 1 year period based on the expiry date. We renew memberships with each gift received, so have to manually change the renewal and expiry dates every time someone renews early.

Have you tried playing with a fixed rather than a rolling period?

Far as my knowledge goes, renewals are possible at any time and apply for both fixed and rolling membership.

Would be nice to see some control measures on early renewals in one of the upcoming releases.

I think if this is important to your use cases you will probably need to step up with some coding efforts or seed funding to be honest.
