Filter Group List for Class of User

I want most of my users to be able to add contacts to only about six groups (as opposed to to the full list of 50 or so). Unforuntately, my needs go beyond the public vs. user/admin restriction, since I do need some users to be able to add contacts to all groups. I can certainly do this with a web form front end to the api. Is that the best practice?

If you are running CiviCRM under Drupal, then you can make use of CiviCRM's ACL (access control list) support for this at Administer >> Manage >> Access Control. See http://wiki.civicrm.org/confluence/display/CRMDOC32/Manage+Access+Control+Lists+%28ACLs%29 for more info.

I understand how ACL restricts the *contacts* each user can access, but I need something that will reduce the # of *groups*  (esp., group check-boxes) most users need to sift through.
