recurring contribution records (the actual table record) is recorded against the contact. if the contact is trashed, that means ongoing recurring contributions are recorded against the trashed contact. if the contact is merged, the recurring contribution record is not included in the move to the retained contact -- which means again, we have recurring contribs logged against a trashed contact

i think the first step toward solution is to make sure recurring contrib records are included in the contrib merge process
