Very frustrating "from" CiviMail error

I have a very simple CiviCRM (3.1) /Drupal install and am trying to use CiviMail to send correspondence from our organization.  I have successfully configured and tested mail settings.  When I create a new email I select the proper sender from the drop down however when I select "send email", I get:

Please correct the following errors in the form fields below:
From is a required field.

Help is appreciated!

I would strongly recommend upgrading to latest stable release. It's hard for us to support older versions of CiviCRM.

As your error suggest looks like you have either not selected From or there is some bug with From selection.

I will upgrade this week and let you know what the result is.  To be clear however, the correct "from" e-mail address is appearing and selected (check mark) in the drop down.
