Getting replies but not bounces
November 12, 2010, 01:42:37 am
Hi - hoping piotr can offer an insight. All the systems on our own server work fine. Just trying to get things humming on another site on someone else's server. Using a Google App mailbox for the email processing.

When I send an email with a known non-existent address I am not getting a bounce, but when i hit reply to the same email from a correct address it correctly goes to the google mailbox and gets processed and sent on to the 'from address'

So Eileen suggested I post a sanitised header in forums and say that "I can e-mail bound address & it gets there"

So this is the header of the one that gets delivered to a real address (obviously) and which when replied to, get to the google mailbox awaiting 'email processing'. The one to a non-existent email does not get to the google mailbox.

Hope that is making sense. Not sure how much you need or whether the below is sufficiently sanitised. Hope so

Hi,

Have you checked that your bounces are not in the spam folder on your gmail ?

Hey X - yep definitely - we think the 'spam assinator' or whatever on the server is interfering with the return path and inserting only the 'from address' regardless of settings.

Related question from another thread
When you reply, it goes to  canmail+r.21.33.9bdd49a75ac3cb52@yyyyyyyyy right ?
Does it create an activity ?

As for you, can you check the mail log ?

It should as an envelope have canmail+b.21.33.9bdd49a75ac3cb52@yyyyyyyyy or something like that (at least different than your from)

What do you have ?

I suspect all is good at civi end and just got this from the drupal configurers/hosting company

We have identified the issue - it's not the spam filter, but the SMTP
sender on our webservers that is causing the issue with the Return-Path
header.

We use a small SMTP sender (SSMTP) which has been working well up until
now - but it doesn't pass through the return path that CiviCRM .  We'll
replace it with one that does.
