Gaming Convention
November 14, 2010, 10:24:52 pm
Hello,

I'm trying to use CiviCRM for my gaming convention. We've used People Gathering and it is a horrible system.

I want to use CiviEvents for Game Masters to host their events on. However, in the New Event screen, going to the next asks for location of the event. How do I make that go away since it will be in one building?

What is a good way to manage preregistration and paid attendees? Any tips?

Trying to read and understand documentation as I move along. I'm thinking of only using CiviEvent. Is this a good idea?

I need as much help as I can get. Thanks a lot :).

If you want people to pay online or record their payments you will also need CiviContribute. CiviMail is also worth the effort if you have the resources.

You do need a location for an event but you don't need to enter it every time - you can set up  event templates with defaults - I think the floss manual describes how?

I won't need CiviContribute and CiviMail. They will be paying at the desk when they get here. Is there a way to denote an Individual has paid? Where is the floss guide?

You can play with event statuses to see if you can acheive what you want that way.

I think a good question is: Is CiviCRM good for a gaming convention?

Sorry Aquafox - the problem is we don't know your requirements. CiviCRM is good for managing event registrations but no two gaming conventions are going to be the same so we can't give you a general answer

Here's how we did it in the past:
- You can preregister, and that's only registering on the website before the convention.
- All money is by cash on the reg. desk.
- You come to the desk to register for an event and pay the entry fee then you get an event ticket.
- Game Masters can set up events for the convention on the website weeks before the convention.

Is that enough? :s . What else do you need to know?

How do I make people register themselves for CiviCRM and able to attend events on CiviEvent?

Okay I finally know how to be clear on what I want and clear with my questions.

This is what I want:
- People to be able to register themselves as an Individual. Create events and participate in these events with CiviEvent.

If they are an Individual people at the registration desk will be able to have admin accounts that can make individuals register for events also.

All I need is the ability for end users to create their own Individual, create events, participate in events.

I use Drupal. So is there a way to create a user in Drupal and that user is automatically an Individual? Or is this all done in CiviCRM itself?

Also is there a way to ensure events can only be created on Feb 18-20 2011?

Most of your questions can be answered here:
http://en.flossmanuals.net/CiviCRM/CiviEventsWhatis

... however, CiviEvent is currently not really designed for "distributed event creation" - i.e. having lots of endusers creating their own events. Most use cases are for events creating by organization staff, and allowing online and offline registration.

Hi,

I would write a custom module using the api to have a one screen event creation, the rest should be out of the box.

Hi,

This chapter should give you a good overview of event features (seems to be more advanced that you want):
