I'm converting data from a legacy system.  I have something I'm thinking I'm going to use relation for but they may have start and end dates.  It doesn't look like it's supported out of the box.  Is it?

Each of our individuals and/or households have what we call an affiliation.  This is how they are affiliated to us.  It may be undergraduate (with a start date and end date (their expected graduation date), faculty, graduate, alumni (with start date that is their grad date), etc. 

I've thought at first I'd use membership but that seems a bit involved and maybe a bit of a square peg.  Someone suggested using relation but it doesn't look like start and end date can be imported.  I assume they can on membership. Or maybe this would be better as custom fields.
