Strict Duplicates not working

I have set up my default strict duplicate thing to First Name = 5, Last Name = 5 and Threshold = 10.

Now, I have heaps of duplicate contacts with the same first and last names! All of these are coming from event registrations. A person who registers for an event with the name Joe Bloggs one day will have a new contact record. then, the same Joe Bloggs will enter a different (or same) event and another new contact record will be created for him.

surely, this shouldn't happen if i have the default strict duplicate set to how i said right?

any chance these people have the same email address in more than one 'location' on the same record - hence scoring 2 x 10 = 20?

only asking as i know there has been an issue that duplicate matching counts such multiples of the same field (or did, not sure if a fix has been constructed yet)

ive removed email address from the duplicate matching. but anyway, no, first name and last name only appear once in the form so im assuming that it is only 5+5=10.

If your Strict rule weight says first name + last name  = threshold
and you are collecting both these fields data at the time of registration, system should not create duplicate contact.

For which civicrm version you are hitting this issue.

Could you try to replicate issue on our public demo site : http://joomla.demo.civicrm.org/

actually, i think it is the membership that is creating dupes, not the events. im pretty sure they are all either cancelled or non-completed forms that have been filled out that is creating to dupes.

anyway, i can't replicate on the demo probably because it's a completely different version!

can anyone think of any reasons why civi is creating so many duplicates?

Please CiviCRM will not going to create duplicate contacts if we do have proper dedupe rules and setup.  :)

My last post is equally apply for Online Membership Signup as well as Contributions.

To debug your case we would like to know some details.
1. Your CiviCRM version for which this issue is persistent.
2. Details Steps to replicate the issue.

Hope u have dedupe rule :
Contact Type = Individual
Level = Strict
Setting says : First Name + Last Name ( weight ) = Threshold

you could make these name fields required on form, so system is not going to allow process further unless an until user not filling required data.

im using version 3.1.5.

those fields are required.

i finally managed to replicate the issue. here are the steps i did to recreate:

1. i logged into joomla. (i already have a contact record in civicrm linked to a joomla user.)
2. i filled out a membership contribution form. i used my same details as in the existing contact record.
3. clicked continue to take me to paypal. then i just closed the page to make it an incomplete transaction. i assume that this would also happen if i continued to pay.

i take it that it should have warned me or something when checking the dupe rule on my first and last name right? i shouldn't have let me continue?
