notification options for recurring contributions

Maybe I am just missing the obvious but what are the options for notifications if someone chooses to give a recurring contribution (say monthly for this example).

1. Just a monthly reminder it took place?
2. A reminder when it is not working correctly?

Or are all those things to be handled by say Paypal Pro/Standard?

Which seems to extend the message template interface and options (our 3.0 does not have this)
