"external identifier already exists" error
November 23, 2010, 08:44:26 pm
I am running CiviCRM 3.2 on Drupal 6 loaded on a OSX snowleopard server. Hosting locally solved the import time out issues I was having when it was with dreamhost, but now I am having import errors dealing with the External Identifier.

I am importing without duplicate check onto a clean just loaded database. Despite this I am getting the error "external identifier already exists" on 2500 of the 2525 contact records I am trying to load.

When I looked at the error file it appears that although the import mapping is set correctly that the external identifier field is getting switched with the notes field. Any suggestions?

Upon further examination it appears that during the import there is blank column inserted in the data table that pushes all values one column over, thus replacing the external identifier column out of sync.

UPDATE: I tried importing the external identifier as the internal contact ID. Import shows all contact records as loaded, but then none of the records show on any searched or reports.

Hi,

1) if you have notes with new lines, it might fubar the file and the second line of the note being taken as a new contact

2) if you are using excel, you'll need to be sure all the latest column always has a value set. eg. put a new column filled with "MS stops that mess" that you don't import, and excel will generate a sane csv instead of deleting columns.

3) move the columns around so the external identifier is the first column

I have tried it with xt. identifier as first column and still the same error. I am not sure what you mean by making sure that the "latest column has a fixed value set" or "notes with new lines" Can you elaborate?

put a dummy column that you fill with a dummy value.

If on one of your line you have an empty cell, excel f**ks up in the conversion and strips the column.

I inserted a dummy column with a value of '0' as the first column, ext. ident. as the second and still the same error. I do not have an internal contact ID for import files. Could this be the problem?

I also tried uploading a test file on the sandbox site. Worked there but same file will not import on my site.

Problem solved. I had to insert a zero in front of the external identifier value. So Ext. ID #154 became #0154.
