Can user choose to hide fields from directory?
November 25, 2010, 01:55:38 pm
Hi,

I'm evaluating whether or not CiviCRM will work for our church.  So far, it looks great, but we have one requirement that I'm not sure is possible.

We want to have a members directory that users can search, with photos, address and phone number.  However, we would like to give our users fine-grained control over which fields they will expose in the directory.  For example, they may want their address displayed, but not their phone number.  Or, they may want name and picture, but nothing else.

I want something like a checkbox that says "include in directory" beside each field.  Is this possible?  If not, any ideas on another way to handle this?

Thanks,
Paul

You'll need to handle this outside of civicrm and via hooks when civicrm is displaying this info.

Check:

http://en.flossmanuals.net/CiviCRM/DevelopIntro

to get started with developing on CiviCRM. This comes up periodically so if your org can help sponsor this development for core that would be great. However i dont think its a trivial project, since u'll need to store entries for all users and a fair number of fields

Thanks for the reply Donald.

I don't think we're interested on developing this at this time.  However, I'm trying to determine how important this requirement actually is.  It could be that it is good enough to have members decide whether or not they are included in the members directory, since only other authenticated members will be able to see this information anyways.  I believe that this should be easy enough to do with CiviCRM.
