Civicmail Blacklisted on some Major ISP's... Anyone familiar? Workarounds?
November 29, 2007, 08:59:02 am
Hi,
It was brought to our attention by a major civicrm site hosting manager, that he's experienced civicmail sent in bulk being blocked by major ISP's, like AOL, etc.

Whereas, these major ISP's do have a "whitelist" of definately acceptable mass mailers, like "Icontact.com", which we are using presently.

What is the experience with this matter? Have others found this true, and are there any workarounds? We'd like to move back to Civcimail, but wonder about the above.

Best wishes,

Douglas

If you are using CiviMail, you will need to make sure that email sent from your servers/ISP is not blacklisted.

You do this by making sure your domains/mails are whitelisted. Your emails score low on spam assassin and other metrics (there are tool on the web to help you). You control the volume of emails you send out in a time period. Those are the basics, but this is a complex topic.

You might also check out the civimail coop service, where I think they are taking care of some of the whitelisting issues.

In addition to the IP address concerns mentioned by geilhufe you also want to make sure that you are using as few generic text msgs as possible. While I have not gotten to the point of using CiviMail yet, I have seen similar problems with other open-source software.

For example when I sent out the original generic Login registration message(for another package) it was sometimes flagged as SPAM due to content, but when I customized it more for our site it went thru with no problem. This is probably due to the fact that not every user of the software is responsible in its use. And the ones who use it irresponsibly to make make mass mailings probably don't bother to modify the templates. So by using diff text you don't get painted with the same SPAMy brush.
