Before the contact image url field existed in CiviCRM, we were using a custom profile field with an image, and showing these in a directory listing of the profile.
Are there benefits (or drawbacks) to migrating to using the new field? Ultimately I'd like some easier control of the display of the directory listing, but I don't think this has any effect on that.
In fact, I'm not sure the new field works well with the directory type of listing. I tried copying the old directory, and swapping out the image fields, and in the new version, it doesn't show the image at all. Is there something I'm missing?

Thanks Joe. I think the "if it ain't broke" concept may be a good one here.

What happens with the new field, is if I look at a specific contact's profile, I see the image. If I look at the directory type view (basically, a profile that pulls all members, and shows the image, name, address, phone, etc.), I don't see the images. I'm not sure if I have it set wrong, or if the new image field isn't designed to work that way. (So, the settings for storing the images are correct, but in some views, they don't appear.)
