Currently a fixed membership period is tied to a specific day of the year (ie January 1).

I think there is a compelling use case for allowing fixed membership types that begin on a certain day of the current month. For example: member joins on November 13, their join date is recorded as the 13th, but start date is november 1, and their membership can then expire some period of time after that (maybe 13 months, for example, to guarantee they get a full year, but still have a fixed calendar start and end date).

Another way to accomplish this same thing would be to have more options in membership rules. Currently (ccrm1.9) you can have rules that adjust a members status based on # of days (months, years) from a specific date. But you cannot have a rule that is based on a specific day of the month, where month is relative.

Said another way, it would be great to write a rule: "Membership start date is [day] of [same/next/previous] month as join date". This could be filled out as "Member start date is 1st day of same month as join date". Similarly, "Membership end date is [day] of [same/next/previous] month as join date plus offset of

[months/years].

does this make sense? has anyone else thought about this?

Now is see that this functionality is available, just not well documented.

If you select a fixed period type, and a membership duration in months rather than years, a user's membership "start date" will be set to the first of the current month.

So to spell it out: if you want a membership to start on the first of the current month and go for a year from the last of the month in order to give user's a full year, rounded up to the next month, you need to choose a membership duration of 13 months, and Period Type: fixed.

maybe the help text for "period type" on the "membership type" form could be modified to make this more clear?

I would suggest that the current:
"Select "rolling" if membership periods begin at date of signup. Select "fixed" if membership periods begin on a set calendar date."

Be changed to:
Select "rolling" if membership periods begin at date of signup. Select "fixed" if membership periods begin on a set calendar date. If membership duration is specified in years, you will be able to specify the exact month and day for memberships to start. If membership duration is specified in months, memberships will start on the 1st of the current month and run for the number of specified months."
