Allow Drupal registrants to choose from CiviCRM tags?

CiviCRM has tags for associating categories to contacts. CiviCRM can also synchronize contacts with Drupal accounts when they are created. I would like to have CiviCRM tags to represent interests, and require users to choose from specific sets of those tags (as checkboxes) on registration of a Drupal account. Is this possible, or is there an existing modification to allow it? Any suggestions on how to approach this?

You can collect pretty much any information you want on the Drupal user registration form by creating a "Profile" and putting those fields in it (including Tags). This process is covered pretty nicely in the Profiles overview here:
