Hey Forum,
I was wondering if there are glossary definitions for the CiviCRM Profile Fields i.e. Legal Name, SIC Code, External Identifier, Internal Identifier - I'm not sure exactly what these mean or how they can be used.

Morgan,

Here's what I think, for what it's worth:

Legal name: I list our organization as RTPnet, but RTPnet is a registered "doing business as" name. The name we incorporated and filed our 501(c)(3) for is Public Information Network, Inc. so I think that's our legal name.

SIC Code: http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/SIC_code says "Standard Industrial Classification" and lists the codes. I've never seen one for Public Information Network, Inc. and assume we don't have one.

External ID: is in the Glossary -- http://wiki.civicrm.org/confluence/display/CRMDOC/Glossary

I'm not finding anything helpful for Internal Identifier. What are you looking at that talks about it? -- give me a path or URL.

Judy - thx for jumping in here! Internal ID is the unique integer "ID" the CiviCRM assigns to each contact record when it's created. It is displayed at the bottom of each contact summary screen - and is included in default Exports. It's primary use is in mapping data you want to import back to existing contact records - since it is a unique "key" for matching.

For those with a bit of technical database background - this value is the "primary key" for each record in the civicrm_contact table.
