New Membership Contacts show "Current" instead of "new" or "pending"

When a new membership signs up on my website, the membership shows up as "CURRENT", but I want to be "PENDING" until the mailed in check is verified.

If you are accepting payment via check you should enable "Pay Later" functionality. This will automatically make membership status pending.

But it works only with the signup on the front and not on the backend when an admin create new membership.
