"USED FOR" option not displaying all the options.

When creating a new profile, the "used for" options only display checkbox for "profile" and "search" but not for "User Registration" or "Events" or any other option.

I had used an early version and this was working just fine.  I upgraded to 3.3.0 and now I don't get all the options.

What am I missing?

In joomla there is no profile support during user registrations, hence that option is not available. When you use a profile in event registration page, "Events" option is automatically shown indicating it is been used by event registration page.

Okay, not sure I'm following you, so how do I add custom fields to a user registration for an event?

You create a profile with the desired custom (and core) fields. Then you embed that profile in your event's Online Registration form (Manage Events > Configure > Online Registration). If you haven't checked out the online book section on configuring events - it might help clarify things a bit:

There in lies my complaint.   The screeen doesn't match the instructions.   The instructions say when I add a profile, I can select "Event" or "Participant" but I cannot.

Therefore, I cannot add the custom fields to the profile,

Therefore, I cannot add the profile to the event.

I'm not sure you've read the sections of the book (link above). You link a profile to an event from the Manage Events -> Configure -> Online Registration forms.

Okay, I'm apparently not making myself clear, so sorry for that.

1)  In order to attach a profile to an event, I must first create a profile (CORRECT?)  I did this in the previous version of Civicrm that I had and I had no issues.  When I upgraded, now I can no longer do step #2.
2)  I can NOT create a profile that I can use with an event because I don't have the option when I create a profile to click "USED FOR" event or participant.  I only have two choices to click when I create a profile.   The choices for event or participant do not show up as choices.  If I chose the only choice available to me, and try to create the profile, I can then NOT add fields from my custom fields that were chose as "Participant" custom field group.    In addition, the profile does not show up as a choice when I create an event.

I'm pulling my hair out here.  I'm sure I'm missing something, perhaps I should just go back to the previous version.  It worked like the instructions say.  This version does NOT...

I can't duplicate the problem.  Once I create the profile, when selecting fields, Participant is an option for Field Name.  Also, as explained earlier, once you add the profile to the event registration, the USED FOR section is automatically updated to include CiviEvent.

USED for CiviEvent is a read-only value that is displayed on Profile Settings AFTER you've selected that profile to be used for an Event's Online Registration form. You do not need to "click" it on the Create / Edit Profile Settings screen. You do that on this screen (on our public demo):

If these steps are not working for you, I suggest you recreate the problem on the public demo exactly as you have configure things on your site. If you are creating custom fields which relate to an event participant (i.e. "Do you want lunch at the event?") - make sure those custom fields are in a custom data set "Used For" Participants (NOT Used For Events).
