Email already exists in database error trying to register

I created a test user and am using that user to register for an event. I previously register for an event with that user and then used the admin account to remove that users registration. As far as I can see there is no one registered for the event now. However, when I try to register again (using the same user account) I get the following error:

Please correct the following errors in the form fields below:

    * The email xxxxx@yahoo.com already exists in the database.

Is there something else that I need to do to further purge that from my records?

Are you trying to create an account as well as a contact ?

(otherwise, might as well want to delete the contact, you only deleted the participant)
