We need to accommodate the ability for a participant to select "Which" Address Type entered on the Registration form instead of having up to 4 separate Address Sets on a single registration form. So people use their work address some use their home address and some use a PO Box.

What would be nice is this - if the Types "Work", "Main", "Home" etc.. were accessible via a drop down list, then the participant might select "Home" and then enter their Home Address, the next participant might select "Work" and enter their work address and so on.

Any idea's?

Currently this feature is not available in CiviCRM. You need to select location type while adding the address fields for profile, so we can have different profile for primary registration and for additional participants.
But I think by using some customisation we can do this ( by implement civicrm hooks and apis ), you may look for paid services http://civicrm.org/professional .

We have moved the data model to separate the location type from address/email etc in v2.0

however we have not migrated the profile code to do the same.

The below request would be a great feature to add. If you can work on it, ping us on IRC and we can help out

With this particular project/client, we have settled on just putting Address Type of Main on the Name Address Profile.

Maybe at the end of the project my programmer might have some time to work on this.
