Custom fields search causes error

We've recently installed CiviCRM 1.8 and we're having an issue in the Advanced Search dialog.  We have a lot of data stored in custom fields, but when we try to search it by clicking on the Custom Fields tree on the Advanced Search page we get the following error:

Error loading 'http://database/civicrm/contact/search/advanced?snippet=1&formType=custom' (500 Internal Server Error)

Has anyone seen this before or know how to fix it?

Can you check your server’s logs to see what is exactly this error about?

Here is the error I'm getting in the logs:

1. could you upgrade to 1.9 and see if the error still persists? We tend to support the latest version only

2. is your machine name 'database'?

I have upgraded CiviCRM to version 1.9 and the problem still persists.  Database is the name of our server and we only access it over our LAN.
