Hit a bit on an edge case so just reporting it here in case anyone else hits it.

For some strange reason we had a user whose CiviCRM account didn't have an e-mail address. When the user logged into Civi & sent a CiviMail using their address in the from (an e-mail address not linked to any existing Civi contact) and tried to include a check sum in their e-mail they got a fatal (3.2.5 in this case).


Adding the e-mail of the 'from' to their civi contact fixed
