hook for mail tokens

I would like to use the mail tokens hook to create new tokens related to the event. For example: After a person does a "Find Participants" search, they should have the ability to compose an email to those participants, with tokens for the event name, event time, and other event-specific information.   

But within the hook, I only have access to the contact ids, not the event that was searched on. Any ideas on what I am missing?

The mail code is not aware of the context of the mailing. We'll need to fix that issue and expose more of the "context" to the tokens. I suspect its a 20-40 hour project to go in and improve that aspect. Would be very useful indeed.
