Hi,

I am setting up an event and I want people to be able to pay using paypal or by check later. I do not want people entering their credit card information on my site - only on the paypal site.

I do not see a place to disable this part of the payment processing. Is what I am looking for possible?

Not sure if this will help you or not, but PayPal does have an option to disable the credit card option from checkout, requiring individuals to use only a PayPal login to check out. I don't believe, however, it will disallow them from using a credit card once logged in, but if your concern is more for "confirmed" PayPal users, then this might be what you are looking for. It's referred to as "PayPal Account Optional" and by default it is checked "On". Turning it off will change the behavior of all of your PayPal pages for that account.

To access it, log in to your PayPal account and visit this link:
https://www.paypal.com/cgi-bin/customerprofileweb?cmd=_profile-website-payments

(or from the navigation: My Account > Profile > More Options > My Selling Tools > Selling Online > Website Preferences)

Here is what the PayPal help page says for that option:

Customers can check out without a PayPal account

When the "account optional" feature is turned on, customers don't need a PayPal account. They use an alternate checkout and have the option to sign up for a PayPal account afterward. Customers with PayPal accounts still log in to their PayPal accounts to check out.

This feature is available for Buy Now buttons, Donations, and shopping carts.

Please note that if both the "auto return" and "account optional" features are turned on, customers who don't log in to PayPal can choose to go back to your website after checkout, but aren’t returned automatically.

If you are more advanced, I don't know if there is a way to pass it through as a variable so you could use it with just CiviCRM and not all your PayPal transactions. You would have to check PayPal's API for that. To add it to CiviCRM, you would then want to follow the instructions on setting up a new payment processor by copying the existing PayPal Website Payments Standard and adding it as an option to turn on or off.

if you use paypal standard (which civicrm supports), all payment information is collected on paypal's web servers and not yours
