Upgrading server and going from php4 & mysql 4 to php5 and mysql 5l
December 07, 2007, 01:35:55 pm
I am getting ready to migrate from one physical server to another(at the same provider). My old system is (Fedora Core) and the new one will be  (Centos 5).  My current server is php4 and mysl 4.1, and the new server will be mysql 5 and php 5. It should be straight forward, but I am looking for any tips or hints that might help keep this as simple as possible.

I am currently running a new CiviCRM installation of CiviCRM 1.8.11536 on drupal 5. I am thinking of doing things in small steps and just switching to the matching version of CiviCRM 1.8 for php 5. After things are stable with the rest of the server I'll upgrade to CiviCRM 1.9(or maybe 2.0 if I'm real slow, but I don't think it'll take me that long :)  ) and then implement CiviMail

This should be straightforward... but one thing that sometimes causing problems moving existing sites is that the configuration settings for Directories and Resource URLs may be incorrect when the DB is copied to your new site (unless you've exactly mirrored the directory structure on your new server). The "symptom" of this issue is getting a fatal error on trying to access CiviCRM - something like "Can't create directory ....".

If this happens to you, one "trick" is to temporarily create the "missing" directory - which allows you to access the admin configuration screens - then fix them to where things are actually running.

Thanks Dave. Thats what I was hoping. I'll be sure to double check the file structure, but the bypass tip is good to have in case the location of the httpdocs folder gets moved.
