Multiple Records for Custom Field Sets
December 23, 2010, 05:49:17 pm
Greetings!

My organization, a regional association of freelance translators and interpreters, is very interested in CiviCRM, have set a budget, and are looking for a developer to basically re-create and improve our current custom system in Civi.  (So we are serious!)

There is one concern:

We have a public member directory, where potential clients can search for members who work with specific language combinations- for example, someone who translates from German into English, or Spanish into French.  The components of these language combinations are two fields known as a "Source Language" and Target Language."  Our members list anywhere from 1 to 10 different language pairs.

So- playing around in the Civi demo, it initially appeared that a Custom Field Set that allowed Multiple Records would be PERFECT for this! But then I learned that this kind of Custom Field Set could not be used in a Profile.

So is there any other way that our members could enter their language pairs into their contact/member record?  And, consequently, is there a way the member directory could be searched by the fields in this Custom Set?

To be clear:  Right now, anyone can go to the relevant page on our website, enter a desired Source Language and Target Language in  a separate search fields for each, hit enter, and get a list of our members who work in that specific combination.

Thank you very much for any thoughts and direction.

1. You can use multiple custom groups in a profile via hooks and customized templates. I've done this a lot in the school module:

2. The member directory search you might be able to do this via the Drupal + Views2 Integration. Not sure, but you'll need to check. Alternatively writing a custom search for your specific member directory needs might not be too hard

Thank you very much for the very prompt reply.  So, I take that what we are trying to do is possible with through customization and a perhaps a developer with experience doing something similar...  Any tips on finding the right person to work with would be appreciated, but I also see there is a topic for posting projects in these forums...

Thanks again!
