Sub Type Relationships can't be current Current Employers... Or am I crazy?
December 24, 2010, 01:59:24 pm
If I over simplify my example and confuse... my apologies...

Suppose I create two sub-type of the Individual called Managers and RankAndFile. Then I create two relationship types called Manager-Org and RankAndFile-Org and assign all relationships as appropriate.

When I do this... unless I'm missing something... I can no longer define the Org as the Current Employer.

I assume that the assumption (double assumptions... dangerous territory) is that I would use a Group to select Managers out of the pool of all employees. The problem I see in doing that is that, unless I'm missing something else, I can only tie groups of custom fields to a contact sub-type. For example... let's pretend only Managers can decide to contribute to a 401k (RankAndFile are not eligible) and only RankAndFile employees have an hourly pay rate (all Managers are Salaried).

I know could also just use the Individual-Org relationship but then I wouldn't be able to tell JUST by looking at the Relationship tab what type of employee they were. I also know I could probably customize the default Relationship tab but I'm trying to do as little customization as possible (partially out of laziness, partially to avoid upgrade headaches later, etc)

Thanks for any advice!

Matt
