I'm hoping to use CiviCRM to send email receipts to contributors.  I'd like to customize the message that goes out, though.

I can see two ways that might work - I could search for the relevant contributions and then do "send email to contacts" from the search results page.  However, judging from the fields I see when I click "Insert Tokens", it looks like the email won't have access to the contribution fields (just the contact fields), so this won't work at present.

The other way would be to search for the relevant contributions and then do "print or email contribution receipts" from the search results page.  In this case I do have access to the contribution fields, but I don't seem to get a chance to edit & customize the message, and I'm not sure what template it's using ("Contributions - Receipt (on-line)" perhaps?).  It also has a section "Personal Campaign Page - Display In Honor Roll - No" and I'm not sure why that's there.

If that's the template being used, I could edit it manually but it doesn't really seem like a good idea since it's a system workflow template & we customize our thank-you receipts pretty heavily (thanks for being at this event, with this circumstance, etc.).

Advice appreciated!

Online contributions use the message template you referenced. Offline contribs (one's you / your staff record) use "Contributions - Receipt (off-line)". If you need those receipts to reflect event-specific info that changes all the time - I'm not sure there's a good approach. You can definitely modify the message templates - but that seems like it only works well for generic changes. If the event title is somehow part of the contribution page setup (title?) you might have access to that as a token or smarty variable in the message template.
