Household membership

In the latest civi version the field civicrm_contact.mail_to_household_id has disappeared.  I need to update a script which made use of this field to create household relationships, but have not been able to find any docs on the subject.  However in poking around the database it appears that the civicrm_address.master_id field plays a similar role.  If so, it looks like we are now tracking a relationship between addresses rather than a relationship between contacts.  Can you confirm?

Is there a way to use this feature through the API?  Or do I need to create a household and then update the civicrm_address.master_id field with sql?

If I am going way off track here, please let me know.  Thanks.

Nope. The relationship is still between the contacts.

It just means that if say I (Individual A) share an address with organization XYZ, this implicitly makes me employee of XYZ and if I share an address with Household (HH) I 'll become a household member of the same.
There 'll be separate entries for the addresses in the database with master id showing the linkage between the shared addresses.
