CiviMail "running" and "canceled" status clarification, also resending advise?
January 01, 2011, 10:18:33 pm
Hello, I've sent out my first mass mailing with CiviMail (v3.3.1) and I have some questions/concerns.  In short - I had two mailings setup to send and processed the queue manually at the URL (/index.php?q=civicrm/mailing/queue&reset=1).  I had about 1,000 recipients on each list (2,000 total), due to the daily SMTP relay limit on my server only 500 e-mails were successfully sent on each list.

My questions now are:

- On my "Scheduled and Sent Mailings" page these mailings show as "running", however on the queue page they both show as "Canceled" (because I canceled them).  So what exactly does "Running" indicate? When will it stop "Running"?  It's been 48 hours since I sent them, and my provider resets the SMTP count every night at midnight (I've also since increased my relay limit to 5,000 per day).  Are these messages still trying to send?  How can I be sure they are canceled?

- Re-sending: that first batch of messages was a test to a select group, I'd now like to send it to the remaining 2,000 contacts in CiviCRM.  My question here is - if I exclude the first group will CiviCRM know that 500 of those recipients DID received the message, and the other 500 did NOT receive the message?  Or should I just go ahead and resend it to everyone to be sure (and sorry to those people who receive the message twice, my bad)?

Thank you!
-Tony

1. there is a bug in 3.3.1 which prevents jobs from completing. this is fixed in 3.3.2

2. You might want to check the reports and see how many mails civimail thinks it has delivered. Might also want to double check who the recipient list is before you send the second mailing

Thanks for the info!  CiviMail reports it delivered 594 of 921 on message #1, and 593 of 806 on message #2.  I've also got 25 opens on message #1, but zero opens on message #2.  Numbers are also probably skewed due to the New Year holiday, I received dozens of "Out of office replies".  I think I'll just resend them, no worries if some people receive it twice.

As for 3.3.2 - would I need to download the SVN to update to 3.3.2? Or should I just wait until 3.3.2 is officially out?

I do know that my 1,000 relay limit per day choked up the system too.  Wondering if it's ok to just delete these?  Or is there a way to ensure these are somehow flushed? Anything it the database I need to do to purge the system?

Thank you!
-Tony

Hmmm.... I resent one of the e-mails today (because the last e-mail had bad links anyhow, so I just resent it to everyone), confirmed that my server is now allowed 5,000 relays per day.

My distribution list contained 950 recipients, but the report shows only 596 (62.74%) successful deliveries.  Is this a common/typical result?  Maybe I just have a bunch of bad e-mail addresses in my contact database?

How does CiviMail qualify a "Successful Delivery"?  No hurry on this, just trying to understand the system.  If there is documentation elsewhere I am missing kindly point me to it.

Thank you!

Hi, just replying to myself here with an update >> If you are having CiviMail delivery issues - please update to 3.3.2.

I just upgraded my site from 3.3.1 to 3.3.2 and these CiviMail issues seem to be resolved!  I did resend (via civicrm/mailing/queue&reset=1) the previous e-mail, I think it may have just picked up and sent the e-mail to the remaining 400 some recipients that didn't receive the e-mail on the first run, it did finally deliver to 943 out of 945 recipients, (the other two were probably bad addresses).  Also the CiviMail queue shows the two canceled mailings and the latest complete mailing.  All is well with my CiviMail now, glad to have this fixed.  Thank you Lobo for your help!

Hi, I moved my civicrm installation to another server about 3 weeks ago and good grief, what a nightmare.  100's of hours chasing down bugs, upgrading and upgrading again.  What a mess.  The latest versions on PHP, Drupal, CiviCRM and SQL do not play well together.

Anyhow--HELP!

I upgraded to CiviCRM 3.3.2 from 3.3.1 last week because an mail job would start, then hang.  Upgrading seemed to do the trick, everything worked perfectly.

Now, a week later, a new mailing.  3.3.2 starts, then hangs at email #444.  NOTHING I do can get it to un-hang.  The client is getting very very tetchy.

Test emails go through fine.  The cron works.    There are no error messages when I call /civimail_cron.php manually.  There are no error messages when I call /sites/all/modules/civicrm/bin/civimail.cronjob.php?name=xxxx&pass=xxxx&key=xxxx manually.  All mails up to #444 have cleared the gateway.  No bounces have been reported.

When I  reset  /civicrm/mailing/queue&reset=1, the page redirects to "Find Mailings."

I have located the next email address in the queue and it seems to be well-formed.

in civimail.cronjob.php I commented out:

//   CRM_Core_Error::debug_log_message( 'civimail.cronjob.php');
//    require_once 'CRM/Utils/System.php';

and retested.  Nothing. Nada. No errors. The file completes--I put an echo 'done' at the end to check.

The client is breathing down my neck (why can't you send this out?)  Please help.  Thanks.

can you check the CiviCRM.LONG HEX String.log file which should be under:

files/civicrm/templates_c/en_US/ConfigAndLog

(or something similar)

that might give you a clue

It appears that the cron is successfully calling civimail.cronjob.php every 10 minutes as designed:

Jan 20 03:50:01  [info] civimail.cronjob.php

Jan 20 04:00:01  [info] civimail.cronjob.php

Jan 20 04:40:01  [info] civimail.cronjob.php

Jan 20 04:50:01  [info] civimail.cronjob.php

But then an error takes place but I do not know whether it is related to sending emails:

Cancelled the mailing and resent it.  Seems to be working fine now.  Would still very much like to know why the process hangs, tho.   Any thoughts?

Thanks.

Hi,

Nothing obvious coming to mind. your error in the log doesn't seem related given the timestamp

good luck
