Adding import to group does not work
January 03, 2011, 12:51:04 am
Hi,

Following situation. I have all my Data in CiviCRM already except for the groups i want each to be assigned too.

I have a cvs file with the external ID and a groupname. I created a custom field to fill in the Group name, just that CiviCRM got something to import and set import to assign all import rows to a special group. I get no error and the custom field is filled with the group name, but no groups get assigned.

Am I or is CiviCRM doing something wrong? :)

Thanks
Conte

You don't need to store the group name in a custom field.

While importing contacts through the .csv file, Groups and Tags are not available to match, but those are available in step 3 where you can create new Group/Tag Or/And select the existing Group/Tag to assign to all the imported contacts. You may need to break the csv file according to Groups and then import them separately.

Hi Yoshodha,

First: Thank you again for your competent and fast help.

I grouped my data according to groups. So my CSV file looks like this now

External ID, Group
23424312, Member

When I import a Patch of 250 lines, CiviCRM writes "Member" into the custom field i created but added only 36 out of this 250 to the group "Member". No idea why, You?

Thanks

You do NOT need to give group Name in the csv file, you might wanna read this esp Step 3: Preview http://en.flossmanuals.net/CiviCRM/ContactsAddingAndImporting

Again you do NOT need custom data/field for this.

Hey,

So I tried the same thing without importing a group name. Now there is nothing except the external ID in the CVS file which i set to match existing contact and. in step 3 i clicked adding all to group "Member" but again just about 15% of the people get randomly assigned to the group.

I dont get

Thanks,

Problem solved

I reduced the lines to 150 and now each individual gets assigned to the right group

Thanks for the help
