PHP5 for Joomla (JSAS)
December 11, 2007, 10:20:17 am
Hello everyone,

After reading many posts on the topic, I figured I am not able to successfully install the civiCRM component in my JSAS installation because the JSAS version of PHP is 4. The 1.9 civiCRM documentation states that I'll need PHP5.

OK, that's fine. But, how do I upgrade my PHP software?

I know that folks have gotten civiCRM to run on Joomla, but have they gotten it to run on the JSAS package?

If so, could you please share? This software is the perfect fit for our small company, and it will only be running locally, with at the most 15 users. I can upgrade the hardware easily as things grow, but I'm a bot stumped on upgrading this pre-built package (JSAS).

Or, just to get things working, where can I get a copy of civiCRM 1.8? I can only fins 1.9.

Thanks everyone and anyone!

I'm a Joomla user, and would recommend NOT using JSAS. I had a lot of problems with it, and found that the tools to be able to run multiple installations of Joomla were unreliable and not very useful.

If you're trying to get things up and running on a Windows computer, try using the WAMP package (http://www.wampserver.com/en/). It is an Apache/MySQL/PHP installation designed for Windows. It's easy to install, easy to manage, gives you much more flexibility than JSAS, and uses more current versions. JSAS is basically a WAMP installation plus a built in Joomla installation. But trust me, it's not worth it for that extra piece. Joomla is so easy to install, you really don't need it "pre-installed." And WAMP lets you setup as many sites as you want. I use it on my development computer (Win Vista) for all site testing, and run all my sites on LAMP stacks. I've had no problems with any Windows to Linux incompatibilities.

I saw your other post too. You can get older versions of CiviCRM here: http://sourceforge.net/project/showfiles.php?group_id=177914&package_id=205038

Haha!
Excellent!

Thank you very much for this direction!

I'll check out WAMP right away!

I'll do what I can on my own, but is the installation any more involved than the JSAS?
JSAS was pretty easy, but it does seem to be quite limited.

Thanks again, I'm sure I'll be posting again soon!

lcdweb,

Thanks for the help earlier...

So now I have WAMP running, but I am unable to install civiCRM from the .zip.

Should I unpack first somewhere? Then what would I do?

Hopefully I can get civiCRM up soon! Thanks!

Yes, you'll need to unzip. You would think that because you're operating on a local computer that Joomla could install CiviCRM from the install package zip file. But in my experience, it's still necessary to unzip it and use the install from directory option.

OK, so I unpack the civicrm folder to C:\wamp\joomla or just to C:\wamp?

I'll try both anyway,

thanks

Update***

Ok, so, I unpacked (I guess it didn't really matter where) and I enabled the system-legacy plugin.
This time, when I clicked install, I actually saw things happening. But, now I am getting that blank screen that I have been reading everyone is seeing. When I go back into the admin, I cant see any new components installed, but I do see a new folder for this component.

Ugh... I saw a mention of editing the php.ini file, but I don't know exactly what I am doing, and where in the file to make any additions.
I'll keep reading to figure it on my own.

Thanks for all the help thus far!

DONE!
December 11, 2007, 03:41:01 pm
Well,

It's done.

For me, the problem was that the php.ini file For me, located at: C:\wamp\bin\apache\apache2.2.6\bin\php.ini had a max_execution_time = 30.

I changed it to: max_execution_time = 600 and the installation went well.

I just have one question, and that is: Do I need to disable the system-legacy plug-in now that it is installed?

Thanks for the help, I'll be starting a new thread now that installation is done!

Woo hoo!!!! ;)

You'll need to keep system legacy turned on. It's not just for installation, it's for operation.

That's a core team question, but without putting words in their mouth or committing for them, I expect by 2.1. They've already made the decision not to make that jump for v2.0, primarily because Joomla 1.5 has not yet gone stable. With the 1.5 code continuing to change and evolve towards a stable version, it's difficult to invest the time into creating 1.5-native extensions that may need reworking once the final version is released.

There's actually very few 1.5 native extensions in general. The Joomla extensions site is a little deceptive -- if an extension is marked 1.5 compatible, it doesn't necessarily mean native-compatible. It frequently means it can be run on 1.5 with legacy on.

Yeah, found that out the hard way ... This has been one PIA after another on this project I am currently on. None of my usual tools or extensions work like I expect. If it wasn't for the fact that the client isn't willing to pay for the upgrade from 1.0.13 to 1.5.x stable I would have done this the other way around and been less frustrated then I am now. I guess that is why we get paid the big bucks, as a former boss once said.

Thanks again...
