Advanced search name field "unexpectedly" searches email (potential bug/issue)
January 05, 2011, 07:05:58 am
Motivation for this report comes from feedback from a client with  ~25,000 contacts in their DB.

I want to file an issue and thought it was worth discussing here first

On demo if searching in the box called 'Complete OR Partial Name' with 'jimsemail@jim.com', the search returns 'Keller, Jim' which is unexpected and unhelpful in most cases, e.g. when there are a lot of contacts and the user is searching for a person whose name is common in an email address.

I see that http://issues.civicrm.org/jira/browse/CRM-273 'Search: Name criteria should match against email address as well as display_name' is argueing the opposite.

But, AFAIK display name will actually be the email address in those cases where there is no first or last name.  So I propose that we stop it any text in the name box being searched against email.

there is a setting to not include email:

http://drupal.demo.civicrm.org/civicrm/admin/setting/search&reset=1

most people want a search on name + email. we had done the below in the 2.x release and got a lot of complaints from users
