Cambodian need

Hi,

Been discussing with several NGOs in Cambodia, and it seems that they don't communicate by email with their contact (bit of a generalisation, obviously). However, they told me they'd be very interested using SMS to push news to their contacts (eg. to promote an event...).

For those working with developing countries, do you have the same feed-back/need (not so much email, you'd rather use SMS)?

Not an answer but if you do start following up more SMS functionality talk to Andrew Perry - he has done some work on it

http://svn.civicrm.org/civicrm/branches/trunk.sms/

some work started by tim otten from ARMS and hopefully we'll get it in for 3.4 or so

not sure how many orgs would be willing to pay the 10 cents or so per SMS message via the web

Nice!

SMS communications is definitely a massive growth area in international health - keeping people updated on vaccine schedules, prenatal care, etc. I know the likes of UNICEF have started funding such projects on a large scale because they have a big impact for comparatively low cost. Definitely a good area to be part of!

10c each sounds expensive but most projects I've seen have had a fat 'bespoke software development/procurement' budget (*shudder*) eating a large chunk of the total cost, so Civi could potentially compete as a viable alternative.

Here's some related recommended reading from one of the early pioneering UNICEF sms projects: http://rapidsms.buildafrica.org/category/unicef-innovation/
