I noticed that I can use a discount with the simple pricing on an event. Can I also do so using a price set? I would like to give a discount if one registers by a certain date but do not see that option if using a price set. Any thoughts?

This is my personal opinion, not speaking for the core team. I don't like price sets or early discounts features of CiviCRM. I think the funtionality is confusing to users. I recommend to my clients they do not use either one.

If you want an "early bird" discount, put a note in your event description "discount if registered by X, X 2011" and simply change the dollar values manually at some point in the future. Set a reminder in your calendar, and it takes you 5 minutes of your time to change these manually
