Total crash !!!
December 11, 2007, 09:21:13 pm
I’m totally disappointed ... wasted 2 days to install CiviCRM on Drupal …  unsuccessfully :o(
I have posted some articles to Drupal section on this forum http://forum.civicrm.org/index.php/topic,1764.0.html  … some suggestions but still no solutions.
Now attempting to install on Joomla, still unsuccessfully :o(
The error is
“Upload new component - Error
Failed to copy file: /hsphere/local/home/...../joomla/administrator/components/com_civicrm/civicrm.php to /hsphere/local/home/...../joomla/components/com_civicrm/civicrm.php”

Desperately moved installation directory to different Joomla catalogues without visible results.
Total crash !!!

Any help will be greatly appreciated

You might want to consider hiring someone from the professional services listing at http://civicrm.org/professional/\

Sounds like a permissioning problem. Are you able to install other Joomla extensions? Within the Joomla menu you can also check to see if the write permissions for folders are setup properly (located in different places depending on whether you're using 1.0 or 1.5).

I’m able to install all other Joomla components except CiviCRM. I know that most of hosts limit access to /tmp directory, does it mean that installation of CiviCRM totally impossible on outer hosts??

No, a lot of us use CiviCRM on shared hosting. What provider are you using?

Thanks for help. I’ve just sent mail to some recommended profs. I wonder to see what will happen.

Hi, Volmark.

Well, I just got stuck on the same error you got stuck on.  Has anyone been able to come up with an answer?

It’s all about permissions to temporary folders and files created by htppd process. I have manually configured civicrm.settings.php (after renaming civicrm.settings.php.sample :o) and got system to work for some minuets. Now I’m discussing the problem with my hosting provider …
Remember to point compilation and temp folders in your civicrm.settings.php to reachable to you folders where you will be able to change permissions.

Wow - thanks for the quick answer.  However - I'm a bit confused.  You said:
>>>Remember to point compilation and temp folders in your civicrm.settings.php to reachable to you folders where you will be able to change permissions. <<

I know how to modify lines in files and upload them.  But I'm not sure what you mean by "point compilation and temp folders."  What is the command to "point"?  How do I know which folders are compilation and temp folders?  I know how to change permissions, but I'm at a loss as to figure out which files for which I need to change permissions.

I think you and I have the same hoster - Godaddy.com.  I think I might have to call them, but at this point I don't even know exactly what to ask them to do.  What did you ask them to do?

Any help you can give would be greatly appreciated.

Regards
CJ Rhoads

Administer CiviCRM > Global Settings > Directories

The location of folders set in this screen must be permissioned such that CiviCRM can write to them. If the defaults are not in location where that can be done, find a usable location and change the settings accordingly.

define( 'CIVICRM_TEMPLATE_COMPILEDIR', '/hsphere/local/home/....../drupal/files/civicrm/templates_c/' );
Then I’ve found that CiviCRM (htppd) generates temp files in /drupal/files/civicrm/templates_c/en_US/  It should also be writable
Maybe it wasn’t big invention but I’ve got it to work for a short time … then came permissions problem again :o(
