Installation errors on Drupal an Joomla …
December 12, 2007, 12:49:46 pm
I have tried to install CiviCRM 1.9 on Drupal using web-based Automated Installer. The only installation error I’ve got is “Is the temporary folder writeable? | The temporary folder isn't writeable!” but I can’t spring it over.
My site placed on hosting provider and I don’t have direct access to system shell. My hosting provider surely turned safe mode on (I have checked with phpinfo()) and it’s typical setting for the most of them. I know that most of hosts limit access to /tmp directory, does it mean that installation of CiviCRM totally impossible on hosted sites??
I can easily change file permissions via FTP if I could know where the wished folder is situated. I’ve used some hours searching different strings throw PHP code, but I couldn’t find out where this magical folder is placed.
Today I attempted to install on Joomla, still unsuccessfully …
The error is
“Upload new component - Error
Failed to copy file: /hsphere/local/home/...../joomla/administrator/components/com_civicrm/civicrm.php to /hsphere/local/home/...../joomla/components/com_civicrm/civicrm.php”
Desperately moved installation directory to different Joomla catalogues without visible results.
I’m totally disappointed ... wasted 2 days to install CiviCRM on Drupal and then one day to Joomla …
Unfortunately CiviCRM is a most suitable application because it combines all the necessary facilities for non profit organization as we are (Union of Danish people with rare disorders). We have wasted a lot of hours to find such system but now we should look for something else.

If anybody knows the solution of installation problem or other free CRM systems at this kind, please help us.

Try not to beat up on CiviCRM too much. After all, it is free. If you want a solution handed to you, you need to be willing to pay for it.

Definitely sounds like your problems are related to permissioning on your hosting provider. Unfortunately, there are about 8 million shared hosting providers around the world, and no two are identical. So it's impossible to build something that magically works in all possible situations. If you let us know what shared hosting provider you're using, others who use it might offer some insight, or we might notice something about them that would potentially cause the conflict.

Since the problem seems to be with installation, and you relate that the Joomla installation is otherwise working fine --
Are you in a position to setup (or already have setup) a testing server on a local computer? If so, you can install Joomla, install CiviCRM locally, and then ftp the files. You'll need to also run the sql script on the server to get the database tables created.

If that doesn't work, or you're not in a technical position to do that, it's probably time to move to a new hosting provider or hire someone to help you.

Thank for reply. I’m not trying to beat developer’s team but just trying to help people with handicap, which furthermore are foreigners. I’m a volunteer and work at home at my spare time and have no possibilities at install test server.
The provider, we are talking about is Danish surftown.dk.
I have some computer skills and can design and manage most popular DBMS but I’m pretty new in PHP.
Maybe I should try to manually edit civicrm.config.php or other config file but I’m not sure it will give positive results because of lack of experience with CiviCRM and Drupal.
That’s why I’m looking for help...

From what I could tell from their hosting page, they offer servers with either php 4 or php 5. CiviCRM 1.9 is only compatible with php 5. You might want to make sure your server is running that version.

The max_execution_time and memory_limit settings for the php 5 version look fine, but the same settings for their php 4 servers are significantly lower. If you are on a php 4 machine, the script might also be timing out (if it isn't just the versioning issues).

Have you tried installing again since that initial error, and after you checked to see if the directories had been created? I'd try it again just to see if the error replicates.

As for a test server, you can setup your desktop as a test server -- that's all I do. You don't need anything special. Try a WAMP installation (if you're running windows): http://www.wampserver.com/en/

It could be useful to have that up and running anyway, for purposes beyond CiviCRM. I do all my template design from my local testing server just because it's a whole lot faster than trying to upload the css file and graphics every few minutes to test things.

Thanks a lot for help. I keep a PHP info file on my site, which generates PHP details. Here is a link http://danskliv.dk/phpinfo.php
Now I’m writing a message to surftown support, they normally react positively to such kind of requests. Then I should try installation again.

Well, those details look fine to me. I guess you can rule out the possible php 4 issue.
Ask about whether there's anything weird going on with directory permissioning on their servers.
