Civicrm "could not retrieve file"
January 09, 2011, 11:54:32 am
After trying an upgrade to 3.3.2 I got a message that the database was already partially upgraded. Since it didn't work I restored the database and went back to version 3.2.5.  Unfortunately I also had to restore a directory so I think I might have lost some files.

However... some pages from civicrm now give the information message "could not retrieve file".

Does anybody know how this can be fixed? (a fix for the partial upgrade problem might also be nice :-))

Well if the files were removed, then that's why CiviCRM can not retrieve them. CiviCRM doesn't store files in the database--they sit on the server. You will need to either find a backup of those files or replace them manually by uploading again to each contact or event or whatever.

Did the upgrade procedure run to completion with a success message? If not, then what happened when you upgraded?

No... did not upgrade correctly. The message was that the database was already partially upgraded. I am guessing that was a mistake from the past and since I did not wanted to lose data I restored the database and put the 3.2.5. installatation files back. Most of the functionality is working correct except for that message about not being able to retrieve a file.

Hmmm, this situation can be troublesome. Sometimes it happens when an upgrade creates a table which is needed for the new version but not the old, but then if you somehow stick with the old version, that table is incorrect. And depending on how you roll back your DB, the new table may not be removed.

My only advice here would be to consider hiring someone to examine your DB in detail and see if they can determine what the problem is.

The other approach is to export ALL your data and then import into a fresh 3.3.2 but that is fraught with other problems--like forgetting things. :(

ok .. thanks.

Hiring is not an option since this is the website of a small society and we wouldn't be able to afford a dba. So I have to see what my options are. It's a multisite installation and only one of the sites has a problem, so I am guessing it is the templates or other files. I'll see what I can do.

The partial upgrade issue is purely a DB issue.

The file issue is almost certainly just a lack of files on the server.

The only other idea I can suggest (if you want) is to trace through the upgrade code yourself and try to see what generates the partial upgrade message, but you will need to understand a bit of PHP and MySQL for that. :)

ok.. I'll look into that... maybe a fresh install is a good idea too.
