mulitple logged in users editing the same record

The goal of our sites is to allow users in multiple locations to share a database. One of the issues we just ran into, and tested was the opportunity for multiple users to edit the same record at the same time. We are running CiviCRM 1.7 currently, but hope to upgrade to 1.9 soon.
We tried this on the demo and both myself and one other person were able to log into the demo and open the same record for editing.
Any plans for changing this to restrict editing to just one user at a time?
