Civicrm with Wordpress
January 13, 2011, 06:17:18 pm
My organization is looking to move off of Joomla onto Wordpress.  We are using Civicrm now, 3.x.  Could we still use Civicrm or is Joomla required to continue to use Civicrm?

Currently yes, you will need Joomla in order to use CiviCRM. There is no wordpress integration with CiviCRM.

Or you could use CiviCRM with Drupal instead of Joomla.

Thanks for the replies.  The issue isn't Joomla, just that our international organization wants to standardize on WordPress.  So it sounds like we definitely cannot use it.

Hmm...I wouldn't mind looking into it.   I'm a database/BI guy, don't have a lot of web dev experience but was able to create a calendar front end for our event registration CiviCRM events, and also insert calls in the event pages to automatically update our website Joomla calendar when folks registered to volunteer.  So I think I could eventually figure some things out.    Is there some background material I could look at that would help me better understand the CiviCRM integration with Joomla..maybe there's enough similarity for me to figure out how to do the same with WordPress?

Please do, I think it would be a great benefit to have CiviCRM in Wordpress, even if I never used it :-)

The main issue with wordpress + civicrm is license incompatibility :(

WP = GPL v2 ONLY
Civi = AGPL v3

these two licenses are not compatible. We are not sure how to resolve this and hence have put the project on hold for now

It seems weird that open source projects are stopped because of license issues?

yes its a bit sad/pathetic/silly/<your favorite adjective here>

We'll need to figure out some solution in some way. Not sure how or when, but it will happen sometime

According to the website, Wordpress is licensed under GPL v2 (or later).
Joomla and Drupal run even under GPL v2

oh most excellent. They changed it on Jan 15, 2011!

http://hakre.wordpress.com/2011/01/15/wordpress-changes-gpl-license-text-again/

This is great news and no more licensing discussions!. we'll start a Make It Happen for WordPress fairly soon and try to get more of the WP community involved.

Onwards and upwards
